Canvases
I tend to interchange between stretched canvas and canvas panel. I don't have a preference and both are popular choices among artists. The information below will inform you of the differences between the two and help you decide which is best for you.

1. Structure: Stretched canvas has a wooden frame that is stretched with canvas and stapled to the back. Canvas panels, on the other hand, are made with a cardboard or wooden backing that is covered with canvas.
2. Portability: Canvas panels are generally more portable than stretched canvas. They are thinner and can be easily transported without fear of warping or damage. They are also thinner and therefore easier to frame.
3. Price: Canvas panels are generally less expensive than stretched canvas. They are often sold in packs and can be a more economical choice for artists on a budget.
4.Durability: Stretched canvas can be more durable than canvas panels. Because they are stretched on a wooden frame, they are less likely to warp or bend over time.
5. Texture: Stretched canvas can have a more textured surface than canvas panels. The texture of the canvas can affect the final appearance of the painting. Ultimately, the choice between stretched canvas and canvas panels comes down to personal preference and the needs of the artist. Some artists prefer the structure and durability of stretched canvas, while others prefer the portability and affordability of canvas panels.
GESSO
Gesso is a type of primer that is applied to canvas before painting. It is a mixture of glue, chalk or gypsum, and pigment, and is used to create a smooth and even surface that is suitable for painting. The purpose of gesso is to create a surface that is absorbent and provides a good tooth for the paint to adhere to. It also helps to prevent the paint from soaking through the surface and provides a barrier between the paint and the canvas, which can help to extend the life of the painting. Gesso comes in several forms, including acrylic gesso, oil-based gesso, and traditional gesso. Acrylic gesso is the most commonly used primer and is suitable for both acrylic and oil painting and is the one I use.

MEDIUM
Oil painting medium is a liquid mixture that is added to oil paint to modify its consistency, drying time, glossiness, and other properties. It can also help to improve the flow and workability of the paint, making it easier to apply and manipulate on the canvas. There are several types of oil painting mediums to choose from, including Linseed oil, Walnut oil, Alkyd medium and Stand oil. I personally like to use Liquin or painting medium by Winsor and Newton. The choice of medium will depend on the artist's personal preference and the desired effect for the painting.
SOLVENT
Solvent is a liquid that is used to thin oil paint and to clean your brushes. Solvents can also be used to extend the drying time of oil paint, making it easier to blend and work with on the canvas. it is an essential part of your kit.
There are several types of solvents that can be used in oil painting, including:
1. Mineral spirits: This is a petroleum-based solvent that is commonly used in oil painting. It is relatively odourless and evaporates slowly, which allows for more time to work with the paint.
2. Turpentine: This is a traditional solvent that is made from the resin of pine trees. It has a strong odour and can be toxic if ingested, so it should be used in a well-ventilated area and with caution.
3. Odourless mineral spirits: This is a less toxic alternative to regular mineral spirits that has a lower level of volatile organic compounds (VOCs). It still has a slight odour but is generally considered safer to use than regular mineral spirits.
When using solvents in oil painting, it is important to use them in a well-ventilated area and follow the manufacturer's instructions carefully. Solvents can be flammable and should be stored in a safe location away from heat sources and open flames. Overall, oil painting solvents are an important component of the painting process that can help to thin the paint, clean brushes, and extend the drying time of oil paint. The choice of solvent will depend on the artist's personal preference and the desired effect for the painting.

OIL PAINT
When choosing oil paint, there are several factors to consider, including quality, colour, pigment, and brand. Here are some things to keep in mind:
1. Quality: There are two main grades of oil paint: student grade and professional grade. Student grade paints are less expensive and usually have lower pigment concentration and less color intensity. Professional grade paints are more expensive and have higher pigment concentration and better lightfastness.
2. Pigment: Look for paint that uses high-quality pigments. Pigments can vary in lightfastness, which is how well the color will hold up over time.
3. Brand: Different brands of paint can have different characteristics, such as texture, consistency, and drying time. Experiment with different brands to find the one that works best for your style of painting. I prefer Griffin and Winsor and Newton
4. Price: Oil paint can range in price from relatively inexpensive to very expensive. While high-quality professional grade paint can be more expensive, it can also produce a richer and more vibrant color. However, student grade paint may be suitable for beginners or for those on a budget. Overall, the choice of oil paint will depend on your personal preferences and the needs of your painting. It is recommended to start with a basic palette of colors and experiment with different brands and qualities to find the one that works best for your style and budget.
BRUSHES
The type of brushes you use are just as important as the type of paint. Even the best artist will get bad results with bad brushes. Like many other artists, I only use Rosemary and Co brushes. There are several reasons why these brushes are so highly regarded:
Firstly, Each brush is handmade by skilled brush makers, which ensures consistency and quality. Rosemary and Co offers a wide variety of brushes, including different shapes, sizes, and materials. This allows you to find the perfect brush for your painting style and technique. They only use quality materials that are carefully selected for their durability, resilience, and ability to hold paint. But above all else, they are affordable! Despite their high quality, Rosemary and Co brushes are relatively affordable, making them accessible to artists of all levels.
